⚽ TTFA to Retire ‘Soca Warriors’ Nickname Amid Legal Battle
Trinidad and Tobago football is on the verge of a major identity shift.
The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) has officially begun the process of retiring the iconic “Soca Warriors” nickname used by the senior men’s national football team for over two decades. This decision comes after prolonged legal and branding disputes over the trademark ownership of the term.
🔥 Who Owns the Name ‘Soca Warriors’?
At the heart of the dispute is Selwyn Melville, a veteran broadcaster who claims to have coined and trademarked “Soca Warriors” back in 1998. Melville insists that the TTFA has been using the name without legal permission and has been fighting for compensation or a formal agreement for years.
However, in a shocking twist, Steve Dipnarine, a former TBC marketing manager, has now stepped forward claiming he is the true originator of the name.
Dipnarine revealed that in 2001—while leading TBC Radio’s World Cup promotional campaigns—he and his creative team developed and pushed the term “Soca Warriors” as a unifying rally cry. He says it was then proposed to the TTFA, which adopted it as the national team’s official identity.
📉 Failed Negotiations and Legal Deadlock
Despite years of discussions, no formal agreement was ever reached between Melville and the TTFA. According to Melville, he approached the federation multiple times in good faith to resolve the matter, including during their historic 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign, but was ignored.
The situation escalated in recent months, leading to the TTFA’s decision to discontinue the use of the name. Melville has since threatened legal action to defend his trademark rights.
🔄 TTFA Begins Search for a New Identity
In response, the TTFA has confirmed they are now actively seeking a new name and brand identity for the national men’s team, ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualification cycle. The federation has expressed its desire to move forward with a fresh, legally sound image that unites fans and avoids further legal complications.
🧠 What Happens Now?
The legacy of the “Soca Warriors” is deeply embedded in Trinidad and Tobago’s football history, especially with the memories of the 2006 World Cup in Germany still fresh in many fans’ minds.
As the TTFA moves to rebrand, fans, players, and stakeholders are left wondering:
- What new name can replace such an iconic identity?
- Can the magic of the “Soca Warriors” era ever be replicated?
💬 What Do You Think?
Should the TTFA fight to keep the “Soca Warriors” name alive, or is it time to turn the page and start a new chapter in our footballing journey?
