The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) has confirmed that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be used for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Curaçao on September 5, 2025 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo. This marks the first time VAR is being employed in a World Cup qualifier on home soil. (Newsday)
Why VAR Is a Game-Changer for T&T
- Previously, VAR has only been used twice in Trinidad and Tobago, but never during World Cup qualifiers.
- TTFA Vice President Jameson Rigues highlighted that FIFA’s decision to implement VAR underscores its commitment to ensuring the integrity of the competition.
- The technical setup will be managed by MediaPro, an international company responsible for providing and operating the system, while TTFA’s role is mainly logistical.
Improved Fan Experience
Fans can expect familiar visuals such as “decision pending” graphics on the stadium screens, along with enhanced audio capabilities for transparent referee communication. This is especially important after the last qualifier against St. Kitts and Nevis on June 6, when screens malfunctioned during the match, leaving many supporters frustrated.
Looking Ahead
The match on September 5 serves as a crucial stage in the final rounds of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026, and with VAR in place, both players and fans can anticipate fairer, more transparent officiating.
