Nicholas Pooran delivered with the bat before Sunil Narine ripped through the Barbados Tridents batting order as Trinbago Knight Riders secured a crucial 35-run victory in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League 2026.
The result keeps TKR’s qualification hopes alive after a pressure-filled contest at Kensington Oval, where two of the franchise’s biggest names stepped forward when their team needed them most.
Pooran struck an important 59 to give the Knight Riders a competitive total, while Narine claimed four wickets as TKR’s experienced spin attack dismantled the Tridents’ chase.
Pooran Transforms Slow Start Into Match-Defining Fifty
Pooran was forced to remain patient against disciplined bowling from the Tridents. He began with just one run from his first 10 deliveries and was nine from 14 before suddenly changing the direction of the innings.
Three sixes off Mujeeb Ur Rahman provided the acceleration TKR desperately needed. Once Pooran found his range, the pressure shifted back onto a Barbados attack that had controlled the early exchanges.
Pooran reached his half-century from 35 balls and went on to make 59, producing an innings built on patience, calculated aggression and an ability to recognize the right moment to attack.
Pooran and Munro Build TKR’s Most Important Partnership
Chris Green gave the Tridents an excellent start with the ball, completing his four overs consecutively and conceding only 17 runs.
Pooran refused to panic during that restrictive spell. He combined with Colin Munro for a 68-run partnership—the highest stand of the match—to rebuild the Knight Riders innings and create a platform for the closing overs.
Barbados had an opportunity to remove Pooran on 35, but debutant Jakeem Pollard saw the chance go down off his bowling. The missed opportunity allowed Pooran to push TKR into a stronger position.
The Knight Riders were unable to finish their innings with the expected flourish, however, failing to strike a boundary during the final five overs. Despite Pooran’s contribution, the lack of late acceleration left the contest appearing finely balanced at the halfway stage.
Narine Tears Through Tridents’ Top Order
Any belief that Barbados had taken control quickly disappeared when Narine went to work.
The veteran spinner claimed three wickets inside the PowerPlay, dismissing Quinton de Kock and Rivaldo Clarke for ducks as the Tridents suffered a disastrous start to their chase.
Narine’s early breakthrough was reinforced by Goolie and Akeal Hosein, with the Knight Riders maintaining relentless pressure during the opening phase.
By the time Hosein removed Green, Barbados had collapsed to 50 for five and were facing a steep recovery mission.
Sams and Rutherford Resistance Not Enough
Daniel Sams briefly lifted the home crowd with several powerful blows, but the Tridents were never able to fully escape the grip of TKR’s varied attack.
Sherfane Rutherford attempted to guide the lower order and keep Barbados in the contest. His resistance ended on 21 when he tried to launch Lahiru Kumara out of Kensington Oval, effectively ending the hosts’ hopes of completing the chase.
Narine finished with four wickets, completing a match-winning performance that underlined his continued value to the Knight Riders in high-pressure situations.
What the Victory Means for TKR
This was more than another victory for Trinbago Knight Riders. With their qualification prospects under pressure, TKR needed a response—and received one through Pooran’s composure and Narine’s control.
The Knight Riders must still build on the result, but the 35-run win ensures their campaign remains alive and gives the team renewed momentum at a decisive stage of CPL 2026.
For Barbados Tridents, defeat in their first home match of the season represents a disappointing beginning to the Kensington Oval leg, particularly after their bowlers had given them opportunities to control the game.
For TKR, the equation remains simple: carry this intensity into the remaining matches and keep fighting for a place in the knockout stage.
