Trinidad & Tobago International Rio Cardines Joins Bristol City on Season-Long Loan

Trinidad and Tobago international Rio Cardines has completed a season-long loan move to Bristol City from Premier League side Crystal Palace, giving the 20-year-old another opportunity to continue his development in English football.

Cardines, who can operate as either a full-back or wing-back, becomes Bristol City’s ninth signing of the summer as the Robins strengthen their squad for the 2026/27 campaign.

For Trinidad and Tobago supporters, the move is particularly significant as one of the country’s emerging young internationals continues to make progress within the English game.

He spent part of his youth career in the Arsenal Academy before moving to Crystal Palace at Under-16 level, where he continued his development through the club’s system.

His progress eventually led to a Premier League opportunity last season when he made his debut against Arsenal, completing the full 90 minutes against the reigning champions.

Cardines was also part of the Crystal Palace squad that defeated Rayo Vallecano 1-0 to win the UEFA Conference League, giving the young defender valuable experience around a successful senior side.

Trinidad & Tobago International Continues to Develop

The move will also be closely followed in Trinidad and Tobago.

Cardines received his first senior Trinidad and Tobago call-up in May 2025 and has since accumulated 11 international caps for the Soca Warriors.

His ability to play as a full-back or wing-back provides versatility for Trinidad and Tobago, particularly as the national team continues to integrate younger overseas-based players into the senior setup.

Regular first-team football at Bristol City could therefore represent an important step in Cardines’ development, while potentially strengthening his role within the Trinidad and Tobago national team.
