The Trinbago Knight Riders’ difficult home stretch ended with another damaging result as the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons secured an eight-run victory at Queen’s Park Oval in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League.
Chasing 184 for victory, TKR finished on 175 for seven despite an unbeaten 54 from Joshua Da Silva. The result condemned the Knight Riders to a third consecutive defeat and a fourth loss in five matches during their home leg, leaving their playoff ambitions in serious danger.
For the Falcons, it was a crucial win in the race for qualification. Hasan Nawaz led the charge with an impressive 76 before Rahkeem Cornwall and Joshua James delivered the decisive blows with the ball, moving their side back to the top of the standings—for now—and closer to a playoff place.
Hasan Nawaz Powers Falcons to 183
The Falcons made a positive start, with Evin Lewis and Cornwall adding 40 for the opening wicket.
Usman Tariq eventually broke the partnership when Cornwall chopped on, extending Tariq’s wicket-taking streak to 17 consecutive CPL matches.
TKR, however, failed to make the most of their opportunities in the field. Terrance Hinds put down Lewis on 16, while Akeal Hosein later dropped Moeen Ali on one.
Those missed chances allowed the Falcons to maintain their momentum after reaching 43 for one at the end of the PowerPlay.
Nawaz then took control of the innings and completed his half-century from 36 balls. With Moeen offering support at the other end, the right-hander drove the Falcons toward a competitive total before Alex Hales caught him off Lahiru Kumara for a superb 76.
Although TKR spinners Tariq and Sunil Narine returned economical figures, the Falcons managed the innings intelligently. A boundary from their captain off the final delivery lifted them to 183 for four from 20 overs.
Cornwall Rocks TKR in Dramatic PowerPlay
TKR attacked from the beginning, racing to 63 during the PowerPlay—but their aggressive approach came at a heavy cost.
Four wickets fell inside the opening six overs.
Colin Munro and captain Nicholas Pooran both made starts, but Cornwall removed them as part of a devastating spell. The experienced all-rounder finished the PowerPlay with three wickets for 17 runs, putting the Falcons firmly in control of the chase.
Pollard and Da Silva Keep TKR Alive
Kieron Pollard, despite carrying an injury, once again attempted to drag TKR back into the contest.
His 55-run partnership with Da Silva gave the home side hope heading into the final five overs.
The momentum changed when Jayden Seales completed a sharp catch to dismiss Pollard, with Joshua James claiming the vital wicket. From there, the Falcons tightened their grip on the match.
James and Shamar Springer left TKR needing 25 runs from the final over, and the Falcons closed out the contest calmly.
Da Silva struck a six from the final ball to complete an unbeaten half-century, but his 54 not out could not prevent another painful Knight Riders defeat.
TKR Playoff Hopes Suffer Major Blow
The defeat completed a frustrating stay at Queen’s Park Oval for TKR.
Four losses from five home matches—and three defeats in succession—have placed enormous pressure on the former champions at a decisive stage of the tournament.
Dropped catches again proved costly, while the loss of four wickets during an otherwise explosive PowerPlay left the middle and lower order with too much repair work to do.
The Falcons, meanwhile, leave Port of Spain with momentum, valuable points and control of their qualification push. Their playoff place is not yet mathematically secured based on the available information, but this victory has put them in a commanding position.
For TKR, the equation is far less comfortable. Their playoff hopes are fading, and they may now need both a rapid turnaround and favourable results elsewhere to remain alive.
