Trinidad & Tobago senior national team midfielder Rio Cardines reached another major milestone in his young football career after making his first English Premier League start for Crystal Palace in their narrow 2-1 defeat against Arsenal at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
The 19-year-old midfielder completed the full 90 minutes against one of the strongest teams in world football, delivering a composed and mature display in the middle of the park during his biggest club appearance to date. Cardines was also the second-youngest player on the field, behind only Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman.
According to Sofascore, Cardines earned a respectable 6.8 rating while showing flashes of creativity and composure throughout the contest. The Trinidad & Tobago international created two big chances, registered two key passes and finished with an expected assists (xA) rating of 0.16. He also completed 25 of his 33 passes with a 76% passing accuracy during the match.
The young midfielder impressed particularly with his attacking distribution, completing 14 passes in the opposition half while also delivering two accurate crosses from three attempts. His movement across midfield and wide areas was evident through his match heatmap, highlighting his work rate and willingness to influence the game on both sides of the pitch.
Cardines’ performance continues what has been a rapid rise for the Trinidad & Tobago talent, who is already part of the senior national team setup despite his young age. Senior Men’s National Team Head Coach Derek King also highlighted the importance of the moment for both Cardines and the national programme.
“Rio has worked hard and earned this opportunity. Making your Premiership debut at such a young age is never easy and it’s pleasing to see him step into that environment and put in a strong performance. We are always encouraged when our players continue to progress at club level because it also strengthens what we are building with the national team.”
Before his first league start, Cardines had already made his senior competitive debut for Crystal Palace earlier in the 2025/26 season as a late substitute during Palace’s UEFA Conference League victory over Dynamo Kyiv on October 2, 2025.
The midfielder also made his senior Trinidad & Tobago debut during the Unity Cup against Jamaica last May in Brentford and remains one of the country’s most exciting emerging talents ahead of the 2026 World Cup cycle.
