CONMEBOL have confirmed that Brazil will be hosting the Copa America.
In the last few days, many were speculating where the Copa America 2021 will be held or if it is even going to take place at all. It was confirmed on Monday morning that Brazil will be hosting the Copa America in June and July. The tournament was originally supposed to be hosted by both Colombia and Argentina but Colombia withdrew due to civil unrest. It seemed as if the hosting duties would have defaulted solely to Argentina but on Sunday evening it was announced that due to the dangerous Covid-19 situation in the country they would no longer be hosting the tournament.
It was reported by many that Chile and the United States would be alternate locations to host the tournament. CONMEBOL however announced as a result of an emergency meeting held on Monday that Brazil will be hosting it. To make such short notice changes will be quite the challenge in terms of the cities and match fixtures but the choice has raised a few eyebrows.
Brazil who are the current champions also hosted the tournament in 2019 where they were crowned champions but many waves were caused when Leo Messi openly called out the validity of the tournament’s officiating after his team faced off Brazil and Chile in particular. Many are questioning the thought process of using Brazil as a host nation based on the fact that the Covid-19 situation in Brazil is also in a dire state as well.
