Shadab Khan produced a sensational all-round performance as Antigua & Barbuda Falcons defeated defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders by six wickets at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2026.
After TKR raced to 73/1 in the PowerPlay, the Falcons fought back brilliantly to restrict the Knight Riders to 165/6. Shadab then smashed an unbeaten 52 from just 20 balls to complete a memorable run chase and maintain the Falcons’ perfect home record.
The victory sent the Falcons to the top of the table at the conclusion of the match, while TKR suffered back-to-back defeats.
TKR Explode in the PowerPlay
Trinbago Knight Riders appeared on course for a huge total after Colin Munro and Nicholas Pooran launched an aggressive assault on the Falcons’ bowling attack.
Munro punished anything on his pads, while Pooran displayed his trademark innovation, including his switch-hitting ability, as TKR raced to 73/1 after six overs.
At that stage, a total beyond 200 appeared a genuine possibility.
The momentum changed dramatically after the PowerPlay.
Shadab Khan Leads Falcons Fightback
The introduction of Shadab Khan and Tobago’s Joshua James helped transform the innings.
The Falcons began taking wickets and slowing the scoring rate, removing Pooran, Munro and Matthew Breetzke during a crucial phase of the contest.
James finished with 2/23, including the important wickets of Pooran and TKR captain Kieron Pollard.
Shadab was even more difficult to score against, conceding just eight runs from his four overs while taking one wicket.
After reaching 73/1 in six overs, TKR managed only another 92 runs from their remaining 14 overs to finish on 165/6.
Given their explosive start, it represented a major missed opportunity for the defending champions.
Falcons Take Cautious Approach to Chase
Antigua & Barbuda Falcons adopted a much more measured approach at the beginning of their pursuit of 166.
The home side reached only 33 runs during the PowerPlay while losing Rahkeem Cornwall, leaving TKR with an opportunity to tighten their grip on the contest.
What followed was an intriguing battle.
The Falcons attempted to remain within striking distance of the required rate, while TKR continued taking wickets to prevent the hosts from establishing complete control.
Amir Jangoo and Moeen Ali both threatened to produce the decisive innings before being dismissed, leaving the match delicately poised.
Then came Shadab Khan.
Shadab Khan Takes Over
Shadab joined Kusal Perera and completely changed the complexion of the chase.
The pair produced an unbeaten 76-run partnership, turning a potentially difficult finish into a stunning Falcons victory.
Shadab was particularly destructive, racing to 52 not out from only 20 deliveries.
The decisive moment arrived in the 18th over.
Young TKR bowler Nathan Edward, who had bowled well earlier, endured a difficult over as the Falcons collected 27 runs. After a second waist-high no-ball, Edward was removed from the attack and Pollard completed the over.
Suddenly, the equation had been reduced to just 11 runs required from the final 12 deliveries.
Shadab had no intention of allowing the contest to reach the final over.
He finished the chase in just three deliveries as the Falcons completed a six-wicket victory.
Shadab Delivers an All-Round Masterclass
There was little doubt about the Player of the Match.
Shadab’s contribution with both bat and ball proved decisive:
52 from 20 balls*
1/8 from four overs
His economical spell played a major role in halting TKR’s early batting assault before his explosive half-century completed the job with the bat.
It was one of the standout individual performances of CPL 2026 so far.
Back-to-Back Defeats for Defending Champions TKR
For Trinbago Knight Riders, the defeat will be particularly frustrating given the position they established during the opening six overs.
At 73/1, TKR had created the platform for a potentially imposing total. Instead, the Falcons’ spinners and regular wickets completely changed the momentum of the innings.
The Knight Riders eventually finished on 165/6 before being unable to defend the total.
For the Falcons, meanwhile, it was another impressive performance on home soil.
Back-to-back victories maintained their 100 percent home record and moved them to the top of the CPL standings at the end of the contest.
For TKR, the defending champions now have work to do after suffering consecutive defeats early in their CPL 2026 campaign.
